Yemaya
When this Yoruba Goddess walks on
earth, fountains become rivers springing up wherever she set foot. Her waters
are life-giving and life sustaining. Waters also symbolize emotional cleansing
as in the cleansing nature of healing tears.
Sea shells, through which the
priestesses and priests could hear the voice of the universe, were among
Yemaya's first gifts to mortals. In this depiction, she wears an 18th century
Ijebu armlet with a fish-legged figure, and raises a sea turtle up to ask for
her wisdom. This brown-skinned mother rocks us toward harmony with all sea
creatures.
