Goddess Bast/Bastet--Originally a lion goddess, after 1000 B.C. as her cult developed, she became more associated with the cat and was considered to be the counterpart of the lion goddess Sekhmet. Cats could be observed skillfully hunting and catching snakes, which had special relevance for the Egyptians since the snake was the symbol of Apophis, the demonic enemy of the sun god Ra.

So cats became animals sacred to the solar deity. Bastet was especially worshipped at her temple at Bubastis ("the house of Bastet").

The celebrating of her festivals were renowned for being the most lavish of all the gods of Egypt. Greeks associated her with the Goddess Artemis. Patroness of all things feminine, of witchcraft and the Divine Feminine, at the practical level Bast is a supreme orderer and organizer - look how she has those kittens lined up!

BAST SISTRUM: Make a Joyful Noise! We have recreated this Egyptian sacred rattle to glorify Bast. Its tinkling will bring energy & fervor to your daily meditation. Egyptian Priestesses used sistrums to create a circle of protection around themselves  and to banish unwanted negative energy. Bast, the Sacred Cat, is also the Egyptian goddess of pleasure, music, dancing and joy.
SYMBOLISM: The sistrum is shaken during ceremonies and one side of arched body represents the Beginning, the Alpha; the other side the End, the Omega. The brass arch itself  symbolizes the Arch of Heaven, and the two metal bars are the elements. Shaking the rings represents shaking the forces of nature by or through the influence of the divine spirit of life.

Bast's twin Sekhmet here!

BAST represents the dawn, while her twin Sekhmet, the sunset, one maturing into the other.
