Mary
Magdalene Statue and Miniature
Lady of the Labyrinth
Mary Magdalene is depicted here holding a chalice. There is confusion in the
Christian literature over her true identity and significance, but there seems to
be consensus that the historical "Mary of Magdala"
was a devoted disciple of Jesus.
Present at the Crucifixion and a witness to his resurrection, she is
sometimes considered to be the same Mary as Mary of Bethany, a female
"sinner," and a symbol of repentance.
Some scholars have suggested Mary Magdalen was a leader in the early Church.
Other modern writers have proposed that Mary was the wife of Jesus, possibly
traveling with him to Kashmir where they preached and raised a family.
She is presented here as Mary Magdelene, "Lady of
the Labyrinth."
