About the artwork "The Rose Boudoir":
Together with his wife Margaret, Rennie Mackintosh designed this beautiful panel
for The Rose Boudoir, a fully decorated
room designed especially for the international exhibition of modern decorative
art in Turin, Italy, which took place in 1902. The sculpture is adapted from the
original painting in three dimensions. It is a romantic testament to the power
of love emphasized through the organic rounded form and blooming rose. The two
women share a gentle look as a rose forms between them. Within the rose is a
suggestion of a baby and the round shape alludes to a womb.

About the artist, Rennie Mackintosh: This
extremely versatile Scottish artist played a prominent role in the Arts and
Crafts movement in Great Britain and his name became synonymous with the
independent Northern European version of Art Nouveau. Mackintosh can be
interpreted as a decorative architect who drew his inspiration from symbolism
and the art of fine Japanese drawing. During his relatively short working life
he developed his very own linear-decorative style with a recognizable use of
colors. It was these elements in particular that made his interior designs world
famous and unforgettable. Like no one else, he combined a strict architectural
theory of shapes with a playful lyricism which goes back to the Pre-Raphaelites
and Celtic ornamentation.
