Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres (1780-1867) was an important French painter in the
Neoclassical tradition during the first half of the 19th century. One of the
most distinguished draftsmen in art history, some believed Ingres portraits were
his most expressive and moving, though his detailed and vivid clothed subjects
often became the key to period fashions for historians of dress. His nude
portraits were thought to express the ideal physique of a 19th century woman.
